■Nansha Wetland
Nansha Wetland, 2,200 hectares in area, is located on the southernmost tip of Nansha Economic and Technical Development Zone and on the west bank of the Pearl River estuary. More than 100 different kinds of birds of 26 species flock in everyday in tens of thousands to search food, mate and rest here. Each winter, over 100,000 migratory birds also fly in from the North to spend the winter here, making it a bird heaven rarely seen in the Pearl River Delta, as well as a replenishment and transfer station for the migratory birds.
The formation of Nansha Wetland has undergone three stages. The first stage dated back to the 1980s when inning companies adopted the agricultural structure of plowing up the land for crops and leaving the waters for aquiculture in the process of land reclamation. They planted mangroves and reed and cultivated lotus roots, bananas and sugar canes around lakes that breed shrimps, crabs and fishes, thus the original state of the land was well protected and a rudimentary wetland began to take shape. The second stage went back to the 1990s during which inning companies planted much more mangroves, completed the infrastructure construction and set up a special organization made up of experienced professionals who settled down in the wetland to constantly monitor and protect the birds. Since Nansha Economic and Technical Development Zone was founded, the government has been paying more attention to wetland protection by increasing investment, converting farmland to forest and introducing more species of plants.
The core area of wetland (The Wetland Park) is now open moderately to the public where people can enjoy the beautiful scenery of reed swaying in the winding waters and birds resting amid the tranquil mangroves forest.
